Sonsonate Department

Sonsonate department (see map) resides in the southwest corner of El Salvador, along the coast. It shares a border with La Libertad department to the east; Pacific Ocean to the south; Ahuachapán department to the west; and Santa Ana department to the north.

The capital of Sonsonate department is the city of Sonsonate, and the department is sub-divided into 16 municipalities: Acajutla - Armenia - Caluco - Cuisnahuat - Izalco - Juayúa - Nahuizalco - Nahulingo - Salcoatitán - San Antonio del Monte - San Julián - Santa Catarina Masahuat - Santa Isabel Ishuatán - Santo Domingo - Sonsonate - Sonzacate.
