Essequibo Islands-West Demerara Region
The Essequibo Islands-West Demerara region (see map) straddles both sides of the Essequibo River, and includes numerous islands that reside near the river's mouth. It borders the Demerara-Mahaica region to the southeast; Upper Demerara-Berbice region to the south; Cuyuni-Mazaruni region to the west; and Pomeroon-Supenaam region to the north.
The capital of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara is Vreed en Hoop, and the region is divided into four Neighborhood Councils: Essequibo Island/Lower Berbice Essequibo River - Essequibo Islands - Bonasika/Boerasirie - Lower West Demerara.
